How to read it
The cross-section is a vertical slice through the hypocenter, cut straight across the fault. Each dot is a chunk of rock; its color shows which wave is shaking it, and dots swell or shrink when they move toward or away from you.
Depth is stretched 2.5×. Ground offsets, sea heights and wave motion are exaggerated by the factors listed under the picture, because real offsets are meters on a scale of hundreds of kilometers. Switch to True scale 1:1 and zoom in to see everything at its real size, down to individual buildings.
Fault size, slip and duration follow standard magnitude scaling. Waves use a simplified double-couple source with real P, S and surface-wave speeds. The tsunami is a shallow-water wave model. It's a teaching model, not a hazard forecast.
